EXPRESSIVE

This photo is expressive because the subject is expressing their beliefs and views. He is holding a sign that reads " TV is brain washing". Whether or not his message was understood by this around him, he still expressed his thoughts. The way the photo was taken with the movement around the man protesting, it focuses on him and how important this idea is to him. As a viewer I automatically focus on him and wonder if people are caring or paying attention to this idea.

OBJECTIVE

This photograph is a good representing of "objective". When the viewer looks at this work, many different ideas can come from it. I was drawn to this photo because of the details and I was wondering what the subject's purpose was.

TRANSFORMATIVE

I recognize this photo from the gallery as transformative. It shows a man holding a photo of what appears to be him when he was younger. He is mimicking the pose and I feel that he has transformed as a person although he is still the same. I was interested to learn more about this man after seeing his two faces at different points of life.

JADE DOSCOW Artist Lecture

Most people think they are professional photographers just because they take appealing photos for their social media accounts. However, photographers put more thought into it.
Photographer Jade Doscow has gotten her masters in art and travels all over the world to create art. She enjoys photographing architecture and
Listening to Doscow talk about her work made me appreciate photographers more. She doesn't just click the shutter button to "snap a picture". It takes her up to 30 minutes to set up the camera and the subject to make the photo she wants. Sometimes, after she sets it up the lighting is no longer there and she didn't accomplish anything. Doscow uses film cameras which I find so intriguing because most people would want to use a tool that is more advanced.
Something that stood out to be during the lecture was that she talked about her work and said "make a picture". Most people just take a picture but she creates them by altering the camera and subject.

Saucedo's Artist Lecture

Christopher Saucedo Artist Lecture

Last Wednesday's class, we got the opportunity to go see one of our department's talented professors. Professor Saucedo is a sculptor who teaches numerous classes here at Adelphi including the 3D, which I took last semester.
Honestly, if I wasn't told to go I probably wouldn't have gone because I felt that I knew a lot about his art and craft before this. Saucedo is a great artist and I have heard many stories while in class doing his projects. However, at this lecture, I got to see so much more of his work that I never saw before. I always love hearing his stories because he isn't boring. He had a reason for everything he has worked on and talked very casually like we were having a conversation.
I particularly liked when he showed us his art that had a meaningful connection to his life. I always find it more interesting when I see a basic idea with a complex meaning.
I already knew about his second home being in New Orleans but I did not know about his brother losing his life September 11th. He created pieces relating to both stories of the hurricane and his brother's passing to amazing artwork. We saw pictures of a piece of furniture that was destroyed in the hurricane and then the next picture we saw was the finish product of the work inspired by that. The pictures made the lecture worth it!
One thing that I recognize from his work is how different they are. I feel like most people think sculptures and they think models of people that were carved. Saucedo's work makes you think and he uses different ways to get his point across. Most of his work was also tedious models that displayed one idea. He made a platform after measuring the height of different children and it ended up making them all the same height. That amazed me as simple as it was. I also really like the piece that was the exact same weight of him. He used volume and form in a basic idea but one that is exciting.
Saucedo's work is very different than I expected and I look to him as an artist because of his determination and creativity. I particularly like the way he expresses his life through his artwork.

LET THEM EAT CAKE

LET THEM EAT CAKE!: Adelphi Art Exhibit

As part of last Wednesday's class, I attended the 'Let Them Eat Cake' Art Exhibition at the PAC (Performing Arts Center). I usually do not take the time to go to art shows due to my typically 'busy schedule' but I have realized that I do enjoy them.
I have seen the flyers for this show around campus and I always wondered what exactly it was about. Well… the gallery showed none other than food! Food entices EVERYONE so I excited to go.

Food as a subject matter is very interesting because it captures all your senses. Sometimes when you see a picture of food that you know very well, your mouth can almost taste it. That aspect of a piece of art really intrigues me. Not only am I drawn to art that represents true to life situations but also, I find strange or bizarre subject matters to be just as nice.
I like when I see something different that makes me look further. Usually, when I think about food as a subject, a bowl of fruit comes to mind. However, when I saw this painting, I immediately was drawn to it. I like how you cannot tell what it is right away. It is a slaughtered cow. I honestly would never think of such a compelling subject. We eat meat all the time! It is food and no one can deny that. The painting is a visual of this hamburger or steak before it gets to our plate. It shows us what we never see and that is why I find it so interesting. The brush strokes are very obvious and aggressive just like the action of slaughtering a cow. I find this piece to be one of the best in the whole exhibit.
I couldn't pick only one that I liked so I am going to include two similar pieces that I also really enjoy. These pieces of art are photographs. They are mouths with food sloppily all over. I find them interesting because you also do not know what it is exactly at first.
The first is Spinach Dip while I thought it was a salad. The second is peanut butter while I first thought it was macaroni and cheese. It is interesting to see the different perspectives you can have on art before you see the title. I enjoyed these because they weren't perfect and normal.

Overall the art exhibit was not a waste a time but a great ending to class! What's so great about this gallery is that it is an ongoing event that gives everyone a chance come!
